Navotas City Congressman John Rey Tiangco

NAVOTAS, Aug. 7 (PIA)–The city government here signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Mother Earth Foundation to push for the implementation of a reliable and long-term ecological solid waste management program.

The project agreement, entitled Navotas City Ecological Solid Waste Management Program (ESWMP)–Phase 1 was signed by Mayor John Rey Tiangco and Sonia Mendoza, chairperson of Mother Earth Foundation.

Under the MOA, Mother Earth Foundation will provide the 18 barangays of Navotas information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on eco-waste management.  The IEC will focus on waste segregation from the source and will be delivered to Navoteños through a door-to-door approach.

The foundation will also take charge of baseline data gathering such as solid waste management perception and practices, green profiling and inventory in every barangay.

Furthermore, both parties will collaborate to develop and implement a stringent ESWMP through revision and provision of local laws and policy support, sustainable and practical initiatives, and construction of Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in all barangays.

Mayor Tiangco urged his constituents to practice discipline and take responsibility in keeping the city clean particularly in disposing of garbage properly.

“It is not right to keep our homes clean but ignore our surroundings. Let us do both,” Tiangco said.

“Navotas is ours. Our streets and our seas are extensions of our homes. We must take responsibility and accountability in ensuring that our city remains clean so that the next generations of Navoteños will enjoy a healthy and ecologically balanced environment,” he added.

The city government recently hired 212 TUPAD workers to help declog waterways and coastal cleanup. (PIA-NCR)
